ArcGis Explorer is an excellent free tool for viewing imagery and vector data. This tool can directly load your geotiff files, shapefiles etc. The background colour of you image can be set to transparent so that only the relevant data is displayed. It also has the ability to adjust the transparency of the image data so that you can see how it matches the terrain view. The image can also be viewed in 3D using height information supplied through this tool.

Geoscience Australia is a valuable source of free data and information useful to Australian geophysicists.
